If you’re starting a new business or refreshing your brand, you’ve probably wondered: how much should a logo actually cost? It’s a fair question — and one that doesn't actually have a right or wrong answer. Logo pricing can vary widely depending on what you're looking for, who you're working with, and how strategic the design process is.
In just a small area, like Southampton, the typical price range varies from £50 to £2,000, so the answer really comes down to what you get for the price and what to expect.
£50 - £200 Low Range
£50 - £200 may seem like a lrgae range, but this is defitnitley the low range of logo deisgn. Whilst it may seem simple, a logo is the face of your business and should be strategic and well thought out to align with who you are as a business, not just a simple graphic.
In this price range, what you will most likely end up with is a rushed logo with little to no research or strategy behind it. At most, it should look okay, but a logo needs strategy to target the right people and really present your business in the best way, something that cheaper logos will be missing.
£200 - £800 Mid Range
At this rate, you should get a good logo. Freelance designers typically charge £30-£60 an hour roughly, and an agency typically charges £80 - £150 an hour, so for a freelancer, you're looking at approximately 10 hours of work, which is plenty of time to put some thorough research into the project and thought into the design.
This is where you see a big leap between agencies and freelancers. An agency is likely to be towards the higher end of this bracket, and put significantly less time into the project, which is an important consideration when choosing a designer at this price point.
£800 - £2,000+ High Range
£2,000 is undoubtably a huge amount of money for any individual or business, and is at the very high end of logo design. For that price, you should really be looking more at a branding package rather than a stand alone logo. You should also be getting a lot more personalisation e.g. a custom font just for your business.
At the lower end of this price band, you will be looking at the best freelancers and most design agnecies. You should be getting a minimum of 3 logo varients and a guide with the fonts and colours used (like mini brand guidelines).
What Should be Included?
Here’s what a solid logo design project typically includes (especially at the mid-tier and above):
Initial consultation to understand your business, audience, and goals
Moodboarding and concept development
Custom logo design with multiple options to choose from
Refinement and revisions
Final logo files in various formats (SVG, PNG, PDF, etc.)
Logo usage guide so you know how to keep things consistent
The best option for you is going to depend on your needs and the size of you business. However, some key things to avoid are;
Any designer charging under £200
A designer who doesn't offer an initial consultation
Anyone who doesn't have a strong portfolio
As a general guide, I would guide people more towards the mid range of pricing for a logo. You are likely to get more thought and time spent on the design, and whilst it can be tempting to minimise costs, particuarly when just starting out, the logo is the face of your business and needs to have strategy behind it. The majority of logos in the lower price band won't have strategy, they will be generic logos with your brand name added. The mid price range offers good value and hopefully a good logo that has had time and stretgey put into it.
